The Idea: David Park was once the king of the startup graveyard, launching (and closing) nearly a dozen failed projects. Which is when David and his co-founder, Henry Mao, found themselves running a generic AI copywriting tool in a market that was quickly becoming overcrowded by giants like Jasper and Copy.ai. They realized they were swimming in a "Red Ocean" - fighting for scraps in a saturated market. They noticed a specific, unaddressed pain point: academic and non-fiction writers didn't just need text…they needed citations. Generic AI hallucinated facts, whereas researchers needed truth. They decided to pivot hard, ditching the generic marketing copy to build an AI that could write with the user, line-by-line, while citing real sources. Jenni was born.
The Execution:
- 2016 – 2021: David and Henry operated as a dev agency while launching various SaaS products that failed to gain traction. This was the "grind" phase that taught them how to build fast and scrap faster.
- July 2022: The team identified the "citation gap" in the AI market. They launched the MVP of Jenni AI, specifically targeting students and researchers rather than general marketers.
- Late 2022: Instead of burning cash on Facebook ads, they bet the house on TikTok. They paid creators to show how Jenni could unblock writer's block for essays. The videos went viral, driving massive low-cost acquisition.
- January 2023: A bittersweet milestone. Jenni AI hit $1M ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue) with a lean team of four. Simultaneously though, David was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer.
- Early 2023: Believing that stepping away would kill the company's newfound momentum, David famously delayed his cancer surgery to ensure the startup kept scaling during its critical breakout phase.
- October 2023: With David in recovery and the business soaring, they continued building in public on Twitter. This transparency attracted top-tier attention, leading to a $1.4M funding round led by Neo.
- May 2024: Jenni AI crossed $10M ARR and has amassed over 4 million users, cementing itself as the dominant AI tool for the academic niche.
All of which goes to prove that, as usual, the riches are in the niches. When a market gets crowded (like AI writing), don't try to be better than everyone else at everything…be the absolute best at one specific thing for one specific customer. That’s the way to win.
