The Idea: Dan Siroker (former CEO of Optimizely) didn’t start with a business plan, he started with a hearing aid. In his 20s, Dan went deaf. After getting a hearing aid, he realized technology didn't just restore his hearing - it gave him a "superpower" to tune into conversations better than before. He became obsessed with the idea of augmenting human intelligence, specifically memory. So Dan built Rewind, a macOS app that recorded your screen and audio, acting as a "search engine for your life." It was a viral hit, but it had a flaw: it only lived on your computer. Dan knew that life happens away from the keyboard - in coffee shops, walking meetings, and dinner tables. He needed a device that could go where the laptop couldn't. He pivoted the entire company to create a discreet, pendant-style wearable to record, transcribe, and summarize the real world. This was the beginning of Limitless.
The Execution:
- 2020: Dan founds the company (originally called Rewind AI) with a mission to give humans "superpowers."
- 2022: The team launches the Rewind macOS app. It goes viral on Twitter (X) as "Time Travel for your Mac," utilizing Apple’s new M-series chips for compression. They prove the software demand first.
- 2023: Riding the hype, they raise a massive $33M Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and NEA, with participation from Sam Altman. The valuation hits roughly $350M.
- April 2024: The big pivot. They rebrand to Limitless and announce the "Limitless Pendant"—a $99 magnetized wearable. Instead of a monthly subscription for the hardware (like competitors Humane or Whoop), they sell it as a one-time purchase with optional software tiers.
- Late 2024: The "Pendant" begins shipping. Unlike the disastrous launch of the Humane AI Pin, Limitless focuses on doing one thing perfectly: meeting transcription and summaries. It integrates seamlessly with Slack, Zoom, and Salesforce.
- December 2025: Meta acquires Limitless. In a blog post, Dan confirms the acquisition to help Mark Zuckerberg build "personal superintelligence" within Meta’s Reality Labs. The Pendant hardware sales are halted, and the team moves to integrate their memory-augmentation tech into Meta’s future smart glasses and wearables.
The takeaway? Big pivots can lead to big outcomes. Dan's shift from Rewind to Limitless wasn't just a rebrand - it was a fundamental rethink of what the product could be. And that reimagining proved pivotal to the company's acquisition.
