The Idea:
In early 2023, Sigge Labor and August Erséus had an idea and no lawyer. OpenAI’s models had just opened up, and the pair were convinced legal work, an industry built on reading, reviewing and drafting, was the obvious place to point them. So they recruited Max Junestrand, a 23-year-old studying at the Stockholm School of Economics who had worked growth at two YC startups. He had never set foot inside a law firm.
His fix was blunt. He cold-messaged around a hundred lawyers and offered to pay their hourly rate if they’d let him buy them lunch.
In May 2023, the trio interviewed at Y Combinator. A partner asked what type of lawyers they served. Junestrand’s answer: “Are there different types of lawyers?” The room laughed. They were rejected.
Instead of folding, they talked their way into Mannheimer Swartling, the biggest law firm in the Nordics, and set up shop in a windowless conference room where the air con cut out at 5pm. It was, at least, next to the Coke fridge.
This was the beginning of Legora.
The Execution:
- May 2023: Y Combinator turned the team down, and a Swedish VC passed on the pre-seed because nobody on the team was a lawyer.
- August 2023: With Mannheimer Swartling signed as its first big customer, YC let them in on the second attempt, joining the Winter 2024 batch under the name Leya.
- May 2024: Leya closed a $10.5M seed led by Benchmark, already serving 70+ law firms and in-house teams across the UK, Spain, France and the Nordics.
- July 2024: Just two months later came a $25M Series A led by Redpoint. Then, at the very first board meeting, Junestrand told his new investors he was freezing all sales for six months. The product, built by team-wide vote, had too many features and no direction, and the company was earning more interest than revenue.
- October 2024: Sales reopened with the general launch. From there, Legora went from $1M to $100M ARR in under 18 months.
- May 2025: Now renamed Legora and fresh off opening a New York office, the company raised an $80M Series B at a $675M valuation, led by ICONIQ and General Catalyst.
- October 2025: Bessemer led a $150M Series C at $1.8B, with Legora serving 400+ firms and legal teams across 40+ markets.
- March 2026: Accel led a $550M Series D at $5.55B after US wins including White & Case, Cleary Gottlieb and Goodwin. A $50M extension in April pushed it to $5.6B.
- September 2026: Legora passed $200M ARR, adding its second $100M in under six months, with 130,000 lawyers using it monthly.
- October 2026: Atreides led a $550M Series E at $8.8B, with Fidelity, Capital Group and JPMorgan joining. More than half the AmLaw 50 are now customers, and total funding has topped $1.4B.
- Today: 140,000 legal professionals at 2,400+ firms use Legora. The one company still ahead is Harvey, valued at $15.5B in September. The gap is closing.
