The Idea: In 2022, four MIT students - Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger - were obsessed with the same idea: AI was about to change software development forever, and the existing tools weren't pushing the limits. GitHub Copilot felt like a band-aid. They wanted to rebuild the code editor itself, with AI sitting at the centre instead of bolted on as a plugin. None of the four ever finished their MIT degrees - they turned down the usual FAANG offers, raised $125k from Y Combinator, spent nearly a year "wandering in the desert" building mechanical engineering tools, then pivoted hard. They forked Visual Studio Code and rebuilt it from scratch as an AI-native IDE. This was the beginning of Cursor.

The Execution:

The lesson? Don't build a feature where there should be a product. Copilot was a plugin. Cursor was a full editor. By owning the entire surface from day one, the Anysphere team made every AI breakthrough land natively in their product instead of someone else's, and turned a 4-person dorm room project into the fastest-scaling B2B software business ever built.
