The Idea: In early 2023, Yasser Elsaid was a computer science student at York University in Toronto. He completed an internship at Meta, but the return offer never came, a blow that, in hindsight, he'd call the best thing that ever happened to him. Watching indie hackers like Pieter Levels start building on OpenAI's API, Yasser saw something most people hadn't clocked yet: you could feed your own data into these new GPT models and make them answer questions about it. He built the simplest possible version, "ChatGPT for your PDFs", over about two months. You upload a document, you chat with its contents. He stopped doing anything university-related and eventually failed two classes chasing it, a trade he'd say was 100% worth it. This was the beginning of Chatbase.

The Execution

The lesson? Yasser shipped "ChatGPT for your PDFs" to just 16 followers, with no pricing page and no validation, while failing two university classes to do it. Most founders spend that window researching the market. He spent it building for one. The edge in a brand-new category isn't being right about where it's going. It's being live before anyone else has decided it's real.
