The Idea: Chris Pedregal was experimenting with GPT-3 when it was new, building different prototypes to figure out how AI could be useful in everyday life. TechCrunch He'd already seen AI's potential first-hand - his prior company, Socratic, was an AI tutoring app that let students photograph a homework problem and have AI teach them how to solve it. TechCrunch But he kept coming back to the same frustration: the world had too many meetings and too little to show for them. He teamed up with co-founder Sam Stephenson, who previously worked at note-taking app Ideaflow - the two initially met through a meetup group focused on tools for meetings, and both were based in London. TechCrunch By March 2023, they officially founded Granola with a mission to tame "meeting hell" with AI. Substack The core insight was deceptively simple: most AI tools tried to replace the human entirely - Granola would keep the human in control while doing all the grunt work in the background. This was the beginning of Granola.

The Execution:

The lesson? Granola didn't win by having the most features. It won by making one radical product choice - no bots, no awkward AI announcements mid-meeting, just a quiet tool running in the background - and betting that the people who hate that friction most (VCs and founders) would become their most powerful distribution channel. They didn't just find product-market fit. They found product-market-evangelist fit. Build something the most connected people in the world can't stop talking about, and the funding rounds take care of themselves.
